Tufted, evergreen, acaulescent (stemless) perennial shrub, up to 1.5 m tall. Leaves distichous (opposite and arranged fan-like in one plane), banana-like with the leaf blade, margins can sometimes be red-edged. Flower emerge in succession in a boat-shaped spathe, producing a mucilaginous substance when in bloom. Calyx orange , corolla blue to purple.
