Deciduous tree with a verywide, dense, low crown up to 10 – 20 m. Bark light gray, with prominent dark reddish-brown vertical fissures. In young trees these fissures are closer together and their confluence lends a characteristic reddish hue to the bark. Leaves compound, alternate and pinnate. Flowers dimorphic or uniform, bisexual. Calyx
campanulate, shortly 5-dentate. Corolla funnel-shaped, 5-lobed. Stamens numerous, basally connate into a tube; anthers eglandular. Ovary sessile, many ovuled; style filiform. Fruit: pods , green
then turn brown and are slowly shed. The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its wood. It can be used as a pioneer when
restoring native woodland and also provides an excellent shade, so is used in urban landscaping and in pastures. |
