Description of Species Deciduous, shrubs or small trees, 4 – 10 m high, twigs and branches smooth, with sharp thorns. Bark pale grey. Leaves oblong – elliptic, oblanceolate, 2.5 – 6.5 ×1 – 3.5 cm ,base narrowed to a short petiole. Flowers scarletred or orange, companulate, 3.5 -4.5 cm long, usually solitary or 2 – 3 together. Calyx tube thick, red or dark pink, 5 – 7 lobed. Petals 5 – 7, obovate, winkled, orange or bright red. Stamens numerous. Ovary inferior. Fruit globose 4.5 – 7.5 cm across or smaller in wild forms, epicarp woody, with persistent calyx lobes. Seeds angled with pellucid reddish yellow, white or ruby coloured aril, filled with sweet or sour juice.
